What is a Sub Panel?
An electrical sub panel is also known as a mini service panel. Its structure is like a service panel with a main feeder wire that’s led into circuit breakers and bus bars. You might consider adding a sub panel to your electrical system to upgrade to from fuses to circuit breakers. There are 2 reasons why:
- If your main service panel does not have the capacity to hold circuit breakers for newly installed circuits, the sub panel does. In a way, the sub panel creates new space for circuit breakers. Yet, the location is separate from the main service panel.
- A sub panel will service one area of the home with a discrete function. These areas can include an office, kitchen, shop, or playroom. When a circuit breaker sub panel is installed, it separates service, making it clear which circuits apply to which room.
